Catch Report: Fishing for squid but came the grouper
04 June 2009
8.30pm - 11.00pm(2.5hrs)

After watching squid fishing video in ShimanoTV Japan. I went fishing for squid with my Shimano Bassterra and Symetre 500FJ. Although, it's not a pure breed squid fishing rod but it certainly served its purpose being an all round light tackle fishing rod.

Bassterra's ultra light and sensitive carbon blank makes a good combination with exceptionally smooth Shimano's Symetre 500FJ. It really makes my fishing so enjoyable that I am loving it for every cast and retrieve I made.
It took me the first 45mins to land my first squid(As shown in the picture). Fishing along side with me were some fishos doing the same form of fishing as well. I am not too sure if they caught any squid but I hoped they do.

Later on, I moved further upfront to try casting at another spot. This time, I can't remember how long I spend time casting the squid jig. There was this particular attempt whereby I tried to strike hard at something which bombard my squid jig vigoriously. As I tried to set it. I realised that the squid jig is about 5metres away from me only because I saw how the "creature" zoom away from me.

I missed it!! The squid jig flew up and caught itself onto the bush behind me. It nearly hit me though. Trace of "water boiling" and sight of a white "creature" shot to the horizon at high speed immediately after I missed it. I must admit that even though I have been fishing for decades. This is the moment that I always get a shock followed by an abnormal heartbeat. After I recovered from that symptom, I was even more determine to concentrate on catching something significant. And I almost forgotten about the amount of turn it manage to twist on my spool before it came loose. Scary and makes my hair stand because mine is only a light fishing rod.
Then it came to a solid strike against something that can pull drags. I thought that my quest for huge squid is here since it fought liked one. As I was retriving the catch in, as the catch was more exposed to the lightings behind me. It was a juvenile grouper at the end of the line. It took my squid jig and managed to bend 2 of the folded sharp edges on the squid jig butt.

Subsequently, I released the small grouper after taking pictures with it. I hoped that I can catch it again someday and hopefully a much bigger one instead.

This was the last squid I caught for the night. I don't know why I kept getting the small one. But, it seems that the tide wasn't really good at the time I arrived. Fishos within my sight aren't catching anything. However, I do hear some bells ringing on the opposite side. I wonder if they are catching any good fish out there.

Anyway, the catches I have here is nothing much worth mentioning. I hoped to share my fishing experience with Shimano products and at the same time provide a catch report. This is to show how much I appreciate my tackle and my love for fishing.

All the squid and the grouper I caught were released unharmed. Except that I have given 1 small squid to a fellow fisho.
