1) What makes you take up this sport?
Surf Fishing
I started fishing from a local drainage and it came to my attention that there is a place called Bedok Jetty soon after I started. That is the place where I pickup the basic fundamentals of land based fishing. At the back of the jetty, there is a good number of anglers using long fishing rods.
Due to the fact that they were able to cast further than anyone else at the jetty and landing big fish is possible from ground level. It inspires me to pickup this form of fishing commonly known as Surf Fishing. Catching big fish which is supposedly to be caught from a boat was made possible by tossing big bait off a surf rod. And catching them on surf rod is no easy task as compared to a boat tackle. I simply liked the challenge of casting further and fighting a big fish from a surf rod.
Sportscasting
The inspiration of Sportscasting came after I mastered the multiplier reel. Besides that, it is new friends whom I got to know from the Jetty that got me into long distance casting. Later on, I was introduced to a local surfcasting group known as 786 surfcasting team which was spearheaded by Mr Wad Yahya. Not only that, I came to know that there was another group with popular names liked surfcasting pioneer Mr Tay Nam Seng and Mr Eddie Tan as leaders.
The similarity of these 2 groups of people is that they are both interested in pendulum casting. Most of their members are practicing this style of casting from Changi Beach to the Old Loyang temple.
It is the Pendulum Cast that got me interested in picking up sportscasting as it is the only method that could send a lead flying almost 2 times further than what I am doing with surf fishing outfit. What also attracted me was the chemical light stick that we attached to the end of the lead during night casting.
With the aid of light from the stick and a proper pendulum cast, one could easily spot the flight of the lead’s path in pendulum motion. This was truly a remarkable experience as it is a unique casting technique. Taking part in competitions and be competitive in distances is what I always dreamed of.
2) What are the changes you had seen in the Fishing Industry throughout the years?
I felt that there is a significant change in the fishing industry throughout the years because in today’s world. Material technology advances fast and demand for quality products were of greater concern as the revival of old sport fishing style executes.
Anglers are getting to realize that they are getting more serious and take pride in their form of fishing as their experiences build up over the years. Hence, having own a set of tackle which they think is best suited to their “status” or “level of skill” is of greater importance than anything else.
Also, today there are a variety of brands, models and cosmetically nice products at affordable prices to choose from. Amongst anglers, tackle has becoming a hotter topic than fishing itself.
Due to the fact that manufacturing cost and productivity is of great importance for survival against potential competitors. Makers of fishing tackle are consolidating every efforts in finding cheaper alternatives so that it is possible to make more products at an affordable price in order to stay competitive in the market.
There has been reasonably good spread of publicity and information for fishing styles and methods across the internet and fishing magazines. Local anglers now take references from these professionals and try to imitate them with what the celebrity is using.
The youtube has becoming a very popular site for people to post pictures and videos of their catches or activities. This could also influence viewers to get involvement or follow the trend and methodology in fishing.
3) Countries and places that you had fish before (experience)
Most of the time, I fished the local shore, breakwater, kelong and jetty for pelagic and occasional big fish. I have also pickup boat fishing in the recent years and have been to Southern Islands, Kong Kong Malaysia, HB Lighthouse, Eastern Banks, Tg Pinang and local Changi and Tuas boat trips.
I am well versed with kelong fishing in the Sibu Island region and did some surf fishing along the open beach at Air Papan, Mersing.
Cobias, stingrays, Snappers, Groupers, Conger eel, Barracuda, Barramundi, Golden Travelly, shovelnose shark and some others to be named was common to me.
4) Achievements? Such as Awards, Prizes, Certificates +++
